Istria has been preserving the winery tradition since the area was inhabited by the ancient Greece and Roman Empire. Today the peninsula is crisscrossed by many marked wine roads that connect vineyards and wineries filled with this fine nectar. As many as 13 premium and high-quality wineries are situated along the wine roads around Poreč. If you visit them, they will not only offer you their best wine, but open their wine cellars for you, take you on a stroll through their vines, explain the process of making wine and perhaps even reveal a secret of traditional wine making… The most common variety of wine in Istria is the Istrian Malvazija which goes well with fish and light Mediterranean cuisine. Also notable is red sort Teran, that compliments stronger and spicier meat dishes. And for those delicious desserts, try one of the Istrian Muscat wines.
