The pinnacle of Istrian gastronomy is a truffle – a specialty hidden under the grounds of Istrian woods that can only be found with a help of specially trained dogs. In their season, truffles are added to almost all dishes: homemade pasta (fusilli, spaghetti, gnocchi), omelets and various meat dishes. Some people even believe they can be used as aphrodisiac! The biggest truffle in the world, weighing 1,31 kilos, was found in Istria in 1999 and is included in the Guinness Book of Records. There are at least a dozen restaurants on the Istrian peninsula, and all are close to Poreč, that belong to the Association of Good Quality Restaurants »Izvorni tartuf - Tartufo vero« (“Original Truffle”). They earned their membership on the bases of the quality of presentation and serving of truffles, as well as for their exquisite wine selection that compliments the seasonal menus based on this specialty.
